“I love X and want to help X financially.” Many of us have strong feelings about a certain cause and want to contribute to that cause either during our lives or after we pass away as part of our legacy. The feeling and desire is admirable but can result in a quagmire of problems if not done specifically.
In the article referenced here, Ms. Thorpe clearly wanted to care for the stray cats in her town, but her Will was not specific enough as to who, or how this was to be accomplished. Instead of a blessing, thirteen years later, this wish has become a financial and emotional burden for many other parties. There are a variety of ways to ensure your charitable wishes are fulfilled.
